Raison d’etre ~ Denkare

I am pround to announce that I’ve finished my very first translation.
Raison d’etre, for those who doesn’t know, it’s the opening theme of Gun-Katana, an eroge game by Black Cyc. Like most of their best OSTs, this one is done by Denkare.
Before going quite in-depth into the notes about the lyrics, what I want to say is: Merry Christmas. A bit late, I know, but I think it’ll all right. Translating this song took me more time than I thought, so take this as an excuse.
Due to some facts, I couldn’t do everything I wanted to the past days, but I guess it’s all right; at least, I did this.
Hope Denkare’s fans will be happy, and even those who doesn’t follow Denkare, will be happy too.

Denkare’s style of writing lyrics is really unique; there are things I’ve never seen before this (and I’m not talking about kanjis, but phrases structure). It was so hard to understand the “right” structure; and even so, I’m sure I did lot of errors in this one.
In lots of parts, I’ve simple tried to grasp the meaning, forget the japanese text, and writing a “translation” according to the song, what the music says, and my fucked logic. So, take it easy, and have some mercy, first time I do something like this x3
Plus, I saw structures/modes I’ve never seen before -probably because I haven’t covered the whole japanese grammatic yet (“So why the heck are you translating?” you may ask. I have no idea).

About the translation: depending on my mood, sometimes I did a too liberal one, sometimes a too literal one. Most of the reason I choose to translate certain things in some ways, is that I consider the whole song as a fight against an invisible enemy (namely, feelings). Well, since I have no idea how to write down what I think, I’ll simple go on.
“清き御霊で 祈り捧げるより | But I offered my noble spirit and my prayer“; “御霊”, literally “Spirit of a deceased person”. At the beginning, I left the translation as “But I offered a noble spirit and a prayer”, but after translating the whole song, I find more fitting put it “my” instead of the generic “a”.
“殲滅の呪縛を撃ち抜け | I have to stop this curse of extermination!“; the verb is actually an imperative, the -what I think should be- right translation is “Stop this curse of extermination!”.
“生まれた命の糧 | This is the birth of my life’s food.“; I know it’s an extremly ugly sentence, but think of food as a synonyms of reason, and in a very, very astract way.
“因子かき消して| To erase this element“; very very curious how “因子” (element) is actually a term using in math.
“戦慄の受難を切り裂け | I have to cut off this agony shiver!“; again, the verb is an imperative, and the translation should be “Cut off this agony shiver!”
“斬るは鋭く | To shrewdly kill”; “斬る” has in its different meanings also to kill (a human) with a blade.
“生まれた命の理由 | This is the birth of my life’s reason“; “理由” is pronunced as “kate”, food (糧). It’s pretty cool how they implied both the meanings. But for the translation, I followed “理由”, so I’ve put it as “reason”.
“死して眠りたいと願うも 強く痛む想いに | I want to die, to close my eyes, but also to hope in this injured love”; one of the senteces I had more trouble with. Anyway, my note is here about the verbs: while “死する” means only to die, “眠る” means to die, to close one’s eyes, to sleep. Considering the phrase, and how Denkare structured the phrases before, I considered “To close my eyes” the best choice, also ’cause I wanted to keep a quite strong constrast between the “first” part of the phrase and the “second” one, and sleep just don’t do it.

Okay, enough talk; I’ll improve my japanese, and one day I’ll surely revise those lyrics. If you want to use/share/whatever this, I by myself don’t actually mind, but giving a link back to this post/blog, or credits, or both, will be really appreciate. Thank you very much for reading ’till this point.

With the hope I didn’t do too many errors, have a nice reading.

Raison d’etre ~ Denkare

明日へ迷う時も
心病む時も
覚悟みせた枷に
心鎮めて

asu e mayou toki mo
kokoro yamu toki mo
kakugo miseta kase ni
kokoro shizumete

That moment again, I wavered toward tomorrow
That moment too, my heart fells ill
I showed resolution even trapped in these chains
My heart is now calm.

今日を生きる罪も
気付き知る罪も
受けて刻むほどに
心ふるわせ

kyo wo ikiru tsumi mo
kidzuki shiru tsumi mo
ukete kizamu hodoni
kokoro furuwase

I live today with that sin again
I’m aware of my sin too
Because I feel and remember it
My heart trembles.

清き御霊で 祈り捧げるより
けがれた腕に 受け止めていたい

kiyoki mitama de inori sasageru yori
kegareta ude ni uke tomete itai

But I offered my noble spirit and my prayer
I was corrupted and gained the strength to stop this pain

与えられし黒きチカラで駆逐せよ
殲滅の呪縛を撃ち抜け
生きて護りたいと願うは 強くあつい想いで
生まれた命の糧
Raison d’Etre

ataerare shi kuroki chikara de kuchiku seyo
senmetsu no jubaku wo uchinuke
ikite mamoritai to negau wa tsuyoku atsui omoide
umareta inochi no kate
Raison d’Etre

Even if is given destruction with my dark power
I have to stop this curse of extermination!
I want to live, to protect and to hope strongly in these warm memories
This is the birth of my life’s food.
My Raison d’être.

酷く痛む胸の
因子かき消して
迷い斷つが如く
斬るは鋭く

hidoku itamu mune no
inshi kaki keshite
mayoi tatsu ga gotoku
kuru wa surudoku

My chest hurts dreadfully;
To erase this element
I suppress my hesitation

To shrewdly kill

癒し求めて 耐えて留まるより
選ぶ強さに この身投げ出して

iyashi modomete taete tomaru yori
erabu tsuyosa ni kono minage deshite

But I seek a cure, I resist, and stop
To choose power, I bring out this drowned myself

与えられし黒き鋼に手を添えて
戦慄の受難を切り裂け
生きて触れてたいと願うは 強く儚い愛に
生まれた命の理由
Raison d’Etre

ataerare shi kuroki hagene ni te wo soete
senritsu no junan wo kirisake
ikite furetetai to negau wa tsuyoku hakanai ai ni
umareta inochi no kate
Raison d’Etre

A way is given with this black steel that accompany my hand
I have to cut off this agony shiver!
I want to live, to feel and to hope strongly in this ephemeral love
This is the birth of my life’s reason.
My Raison d’être.

与えられし黒きチカラで駆逐せよ
殲滅の呪縛を撃ち抜け
生きて護りたいと願うは 強くあつい想いで
生まれた命の糧
死して眠りたいと願うも 強く痛む想いに
やがては目覚めてゆく
生きて触れてたいと願うは 強く儚い愛に
生まれた命の理由
Raison d’Etre

I have to stop this curse of extermination!
I want to live, to protect and to hope strongly in this warm memories
This is the birth of my life’s food.
I want to die, to close my eyes, but I still hope in this injured love
After so long, I’ll finally wake up
I want to live, to feel and to hope strongly in these ephemeral love
The birth of my life’s reason.
My Raison d’être.
