Secret treasure ~ Draw the Emotional

If Hijiri is a Lotus, then Shou is a Wild Rose.

I really love Shou as a character, she’s amazing. It’s a pity there aren’t many people who like her, I think she has a great background; surely, UFO and TD are the games with the best characters development, expecially in terms of stories. Anyway, I’m not here to talk about how beautiful I consider UFO and TD casts; time to move on.

I truly want to think that this arrangement is about Shou and Hijiri. I’ve seen lots of references to the game, and I think it’s about Shou’s attempt to free Hijiri from her seal. Someone might see also Nazrin trances in the text, and I actually can’t deny it, but in my opinion all the “treasure” parts are referred to the UFOs (if you’ve played Touhou 12, and know its story, you know what I’m talking about).

Since I might not cover all the referecences in this song, it’d be a good idea to check Touhou UFO’s story if you haven’t done yet.

Notes

Just a couple of word before starting with the notes: by far, this is probably the most difficult song I’ve ever translated, since lots of phrases are left without particles. This means, what for me it’s a subject, for you could be an object, or something else, and vice-versa. Which means, this is my interpretation of the song. It won’t be a surprise if I’ve mistaken some structures and made the wrong translation. I’ll surely revise this song in a future, but until that time, I hope you’ll like how the translation turned out, even if it might be not right.
Also, I’ve left the lyrics exactly how they’re written in the booklet, but for romanjis, as always, I’ve kept only those inside the song.

眺め横切ったなら夜に浮かぶ都市へ | When I cross the sky at night, I head towards the floating city”; just to let you see how complicated this song is. What makes this phrase so complicated it that the order of the words is screwed up, or there are omitted pieces. So, you can see this one as “If I had crossed the scene at night, I would have headed towards a floating city”, “If I’d crossed the scene at night, I would head toward a floating city” or, assuming the verb is actually a verb and it’s not related to the noun, “If I had crossed the scene at night, I would float towards a city”, “When I cross the scene at night, I float towards a city”. I had a lot of troubles on this one, but I decided to add a verb, considering the phrase structure as right, and substitute “scene” with “sky”.
追い求め遥か宙(そら)| The pursued far away sky”; sky is written with the kanji of “space, air”. Considering which game we’re talking about, I found this as a really nice touch.
影に張り付いた | I clung to a light”; the curious thing here is that the kanji used for “light” has as primary meaning “shadow”, but assuming the context, I’ve found “light” way more fitting. This is the same reason why, in the other stanza, I’ve translated it as “shadow”.
時空(とき)の中を | Inside the time”; “time” here’s written as “space-time”, which could be both a  reference to Hijiri’s condition or to Shou’s will to find a way to free Hijiri in this “space” after a long “time”.
奏で嘲笑した(ほほえんだ)| And smiled”; aside the fact I’m not sure when I’ll be able to understand the meaning –usage- of 「奏で」, because I’m not sure how to read it in this context since it means “To play an instrument” (and I wasn’t able to find a good explanation), what’s really curious yet fascinating is about the second word,  「嘲笑した」. It’s pronounced as “to smile”, but it actually means “to sneer”. It’s like there are two people who have different feelings in front of it.
伝う雫に映る| Is reflected in a falling drop”; even if the kanji for “drop” is usually used to describe water drops, I wanted to keep the ambiguity of it to be either a raindrop or a teardrop, since the latter one is the “answer” I’d give if I had to follow the melody.
歪んだ一輪、野薔薇(私)が揺れる |  The distorted flower, it’s me who shakes”; I love the work behind this. It’s because of this that I started this post with that phrase. “I” is written as “wild rose”, and I wouldn’t be able to find a better flower to describe Shou, and with the song itself. The Wild Rose has different meanings; it’s associated with the “simplicity” in the language of flowers, and the Rosa Canina (Dog Rose), an European wild rose very common in Italy, means “pleasure and pain”. For completeness, and since it’s in the lyrics, the Lotus symbolizes the purity, beauty and the perfection in the Buddhism, and the life and rebirth in the ancient Egypt.

Secret treasure ~ Draw the Emotional

流れ行く雲の裏踊り狂う星を
眺め横切ったなら夜に浮かぶ都市へ
答えなど意味を成す宝でしかなくて
追い求め遥か宙(そら)
課せられたesoteric(エソテリック)

nagareyuku kumo no ura odorikurou hoshi wo
nagame yokokitta nara yoru ni ukabu toshi e
kotae nado imi wo nasu takara de shikanakute
oimotome haruka sora
kaserareta esoteric

Behind wandering clouds and dancing stars
When I cross the sky at night, I head towards the floating city
I don’t even try to find an answer or a meaning to the treasure
The pursued far away sky
Was imposed as esoteric

影に張り付いた
時空(とき)の中を
切り裂く咎
抱え込んだ運命の歯車を回して
噛み合ったオラトリオを
奏で嘲笑した(ほほえんだ)

kage ni haritsuita
toki no naka wo
kirisaku doka
kakaekonda unmei no haguruma o mawashite
kamiatta oratorio wo
kanade hohoenda

I clung to a light
Inside the time
Tearing in pieces my sins
I embraced the rotating wheel of destiny
Chained my oratorio
And smiled

流れ行くほうき星
儚く散る定め
抗う少女の歌
声は遠のいて

nagareyuku houkihoshi
hakanaku chiru sadame
aragau shoujou no uta
koe wa toonoite

For a wandering comet
It’s a law to disappear soon
A girl’s song denies it
But her voice is becoming distant

虚空さえ寄る辺なく
己が心は何処
小さなこの体で
飛宝(たからもの)にすがる

kokuu sae yorube naku
onoga kokoro wa doko
chiisana kono karada
takaramono ni sugaru

If the empty sky is not the place where to go,
Where’s my heart?
Is it in this small body?
I cling to that treasure

影を引き裂いた
雷(いかづち)さえ
彼方遠く
深淵の闇の中で
ただひたすらもがく
伸ばした手の先にほら
あなたの欠片が

kage wo hikisaita
ikadzuchi sae
kanata tooku
shinen no yami no naka de
tada hitasura mogaku
nobashita te no sakini hora
anata no kakera ga

It tore apart the shadows
Could it be a thunder,
Far away, in the distant?
Inside the abyss of darkness
There’s nothing to do, but struggle
Look, I stretched my hand ahead
There’s a fragment of you

美しき蓮の葉に
伝う雫に映る
歪んだ一輪、野薔薇(私)が揺れる

utsukushiki hasu no ha ni
utau shizuku ni utsuru
yuganda ichirin, watashi ga yureru

In beautiful lotus’ leaf
In a falling drop, is reflected
A distorted flower; it’s me who shakes

影に張り付いた
時空(とき)の中を
切り裂く咎
抱え込んだ運命の歯車を回して
噛み合ったオラトリオを
奏で嘲笑した(ほほえんだ)

kage ni haritsuita
toki no naka wo
kirisaku doka
kakaekonda unmei no haguruma o mawashite
kamiatta oratorio wo
kanade hohoenda

I clung to a light
Inside the time
Tearing in pieces my sins
I embraced the rotating wheel of destiny
Chained my oratorio
And smiled
