天涯 ~ UNDEAD CORPORATION

a3ee62b82b9e0c5badf61e251975000aI think I’ve already expressed my love for this circle, but I’ll fag some more. Pine’s lyrics are awesome, Pinetree arrangements are awesome, and since they’ll both be present in UNDEAD CORPORATION’s next album, I’m quite curious about what they’ll made. I’m not sure about what expecting from a Jazz Vocal album by UNDEAD CORPORATION, but I hope it’ll be a CD full of surprises and nice songs~

Pine’s lyrics are always so cool, and so damn hard to translate. I personally love how she, for what I’ve seen, bases her lyrics on legends or tales; this adds something “magic” to them, making the songs even more awesome than how they already are. She’s surely one of the lyricists I prefer despite the fact I sometimes want to throw away everything when trying to translate her lyrics. Okay, I guess I’ve fagged over UNDEAD CORPORATION Pine enough, time to move on the actual translation~

Notes

天涯 | Distant Land”; despite the fact I’ve seen this title translated a lot as “Horizon”, I’ve preferred translate it as “Distant Land” because of the last line of the lyrics. “Horizon Moon” to me means nothing, and I’ve seen that line as if it was referred to a moon of another “world”.

燈明消し | The sacred light”; “燈明” are those candles or torches offered to a god or Buddha –thus why I’ve decided to add the “sacred” in the translation. If you have no idea what they look like, just google it, I bet you’ve seen them quite often, especially if you’re used to watch anime –a certain Higurashi illustration comes to my mind~
酔うて | How everyone”; “妖異” is pronounced as “Ayakashi”, and the whole phrase gets a different meaning if seen in this way –and well, it’s impossible to have this “double” meaning in English. The “alternative” translation would sound ridiculous among the line of “Being drunk is for all the spirits”. I’m not really sure what’s the meaning behind this, probably is part of a legend or some tale, but at the moment I’m too lazy to search it and I’m not even sure those lyrics are based on any.
ぞぶりぞぶりと | Zoburi, zoburi”; as for me, there’s no way to find an equivalent “sound” in English. If someone has any idea and wants to share it, I’d be really glad~
こりりこりりと | Koriri, koriri”; same as above. Except for the fact I’d translated it as “Crunch”, but in the end decided to keep the “mysterious” atmosphere and left “koriri”.
いくたびこの山 | Many times”; here the word used at the end is not “spirit” but “smoke”, but considering the context, my interpretation is that this “smoke” is actually the people’s soul.

天涯

今宵の月をどこで愛でようか
燈明消し宴をひらこうぞ
瓶子も杯もいらぬまま 酔うてはみな妖異

koyoi no tsuki wo goto de medeyou ka
toumyou keshi utage hirakouzo
heishi mo sakazuki mo iranu mama you te wa mina ayakashi

Where should I admire tonight’s moon?
The sacred lights extinguish, revealing the feast
Since there aren’t jars nor sake cups, how they got drunk is for everyone a mystery

ぞぶりぞぶりと 何を啖う音かえ? ぞぶりぞぶり
こりりこりりと 骨を齧る音じゃ こりりこりり

zoburi zoburi to nani wo kuu oto kae? zoburi zoburi
koriri koriri to hone wo kajiru otoja koriri koriri

“Zoburi, zoburi”, is this the sound made when eating something? “Zoburi, zoburi”
“Koriri, koriri”, is the sound made when chewing bones; “Koriri, koriri”

In a pitch-black
Night I ran along a narrow path; where’s that person?
Under the moonlit
The path splits into other directions; that person won’t ever come back

With the bow
Ready, lost in a transient world where that person won’t come back

  1. Hello, I’m here to point and ask another thing if you don’t mind.

In the line “いくたびこの山が笑おうと 黄金白銀もみな烟,” it seems that the romaji doesn’t match up to what she sings. Wouldn’t it turn out to be “ikutabi kono yama ga waraou to kingin mo mina kemuri”?

Thank you for your time once again!

    • Also, it seems that the stanza after this line that I’m asking about should repeat this:
      舞をさす凍解けたこの山で 朧月夜手を打ち鳴らし
      瓶子も杯もいらぬまま 酔うてはみな幻力

      • Yeah, it’s “kingin”, not “kigin” in romaji, I mispelled it; thank you for pointing it out!

Though, I don’t quite get what do you mean with your last comment; at first I thought I missed a stanza, but I’ve checked it and I’m pretty sure there isn’t any stanza missing. Then again, I might have simply misunderstood your words; I apologize if it’s this case-

  2. Ah, I’m sorry, it might be from me wording it wrongly. I’m pretty sure that this spot is messed up, right here: http://imgur.com/d8q31O7

It seems that the line that I have marked should be this:

    舞をさす凍解けたこの山で 朧月夜手を打ち鳴らし

mai wo sasu itedoketa kono yama de oborodzukiyo te wo uchinarushi

Dancing, on this melting mountain, clapping the hands in the moonlit night

    • In the end it was missing a line. The whole “舞をさす” stanza is repeated right before the ending part of the song and I completely missed it, but now it all should be fine.
Once again, thank you for pointing it out!
