Unbreakable ~ The Root of Heads

「運命さえ変える、己が手で―――」

「Change fate, with your own hands―――」

Debatable whether it should be translated in this way or as “I will change even fate, with my own hands”. I think the one above is more “eerie”, but still, that’s just my opinion.

Recently –well, by the time this post will come out, it’ll be a lot- I went (finally) picking up my copy of “DastinIa”, which I’ll probably never open, but I was so happy to find it still available on some unknown sites –I kept procrastinating buying it only because, at the most notorious shops, it was (and probably is still) out of stock. During the same time, I was talking with a few people about how perfect I find this album: not a single track is out of place, everything is simply where it should be. If you think about “DastinIa” as a story, you’ll realize how every composition is the continuation of the previous one, yet a whole new story. I’m always amazed how this album is able to give me chills each time I listen to it, even if it’s almost three years –of course, with some “pauses”- I’ve been listening to it.

Fun -?- fact: Unbreakable is the only song fully released by Meis Clauson himself. Thus why, I putted the video above here. The Japanese phrase above is the one written on the CD’s obi –because it’s called obi, right?-, on the video’s description as well and within the lyrics too, so I thought to put it up there as well.

The number of particles in the whole song is limited. This fact leads to potentially infinite possible translations and upon how someone decides to see this song and, consequentially, interpreter it, the translation can drastically change. As I will say below in a note, for me this song is a talk between someone who’s dying or forced to leave (my guess is the boy from the previous song) and the protagonist. This doesn’t mean the song is written under a specific point of view: in fact, I believe there are some parts written under the boy’s point of view, while other are written under the girl’s point of view –I don’t know if it’s actually a girl but I believe so because of the album cover.

Notes

暗号解いたら | If you”; the literal translation of the latter part is “The sky (…) can lead even today to tomorrow”. I’ve personally preferred divide the two phrases not only because of a metrics matter, but also because they’re sung “separated”. Anyway, I think I’ve kept the overall meaning of “today will turn into tomorrow”, so I hope you’ll find good my choice.
運命さえ | Change”; note that this phrase can safely mean “I’ll change destiny with my own hands”. The reason why I’ve decided to translate it in this way is because I see this whole song as a talk between someone who’s dying or forced to leave (possibly the boy from the previous song) and the protagonist.
腕を伝う | By myself”; you can also read this phrase as “With my own strength, I (…)”. “腕を伝う” literally means “to follow (one’s) skill” when taken by itself, but one can also read “腕を伝う紅い線 振り払って” all together without dividing the phrases how I’ve done –basically, “腕を伝う” and “紅い線振り払って” are two separated phrases for me.
どのくらい | No matter”; keep in mind that “どのくらい” is sung exactly like “Don’t cry” even if it’s written as “どのくらい”. I’ve personally preferred keeping the Japanese meaning for this phrase, even if it can safely be keept “Don’t cry”.

Unbreakable

Don’t Cry 傷ついて この目が
その世界から 消えても

Don’t Cry kizutsuite kono me ga
sono sekai kara kiete mo

Don’t cry, these injured eyes
Vanished from that world

Undated 空は 躁狂 澱みを携えて
暗号解いたら“今日”も”明日”へ導ける

Undated sora wa soukyou yodomi o tazusaete
angou toitara “kyou” mo “ashita” e michibikeru

Undated, the sky carries noises and sediments
If you solve the code, “today” will be “tomorrow”

掲げた剣で

kakageta tsurugi de

By the sword I carried

Don’t Cry 傷ついて この目が
その世界から 消えても
情想 生き様を見せつけ
運命さえ変える 己が手で

Don’t Cry kizutsuite kono me ga
sono sekai kara kiete mo
jousou ikizama o misetsuke
unmei sae kaeru onoga tede

Don’t cry, these injured eyes
Vanished from that world
I’ll show you my whole essence
Change fate with your hands

Untold 何も証明されないと叫び続け
双眸据える 戦塵“恐れ”は切り裂いた

Untold nanimo shoumeisare naito sakebi tsudzuke
soubou sueru senjin “osore” wa kirisaita

Untold, I kept shouting everything that can’t be proven
I stare at the eyes the war’s “fear” tore apart

伸ばしたその手で

nobashita sono te de

By the hand I stretched

Don’t Say 何度でも蘇える
強風吹き荒れる中でも
終生 守るべきものなら
その生命かけて 向かい打て

Don’t say nandodemo yomigaeru
kyoufuu fukiareru nakademo
shuusei mamoru beki mono nara
sono inochi kakete mokai ute

Don’t say the times I’ve been revived
Even inside a strong wind blowing
If I could protect you, until the end
I’ll stake this life and face it

始まった争いは 何を生み何を消す?
腕を伝う紅い線 振り払って

hajimatta arasoi wa nani wo umi nani wo kesu?
ude wo utau akai sen furiharatte

When the conflict started, what was born, what erased?
By myself, I shook off this red string

Don’t Cry 傷ついた この目で
探した先にあるだろう
どうせ最期まで生き抜く
運命を選んだ者なら

Don’t Cry kizutsuita kono me de
sagashita sakini aru darou
douse saigo made ikinuku
unmei wo eranda mono nara

Don’t cry, with these injured eyes
What I searched, is still here
After all, it survived till the end
If I could have chosen my fate

どのくらい流しても 消せない
証明を残してゆくから
Don’t Cry 傷ついても この目は
剣を振り翳す 己が手で

donokurai nagashite mo kisenai
shoumei wo nokoshite yuku kara
Don’t Cry kizutsuite mo kono me wa
ken wo furikazasu onoga te de

No matter how far I go, it can’t erase
The proof I’ve left behind
Don’t cry, even with these injured eyes
I’ll brandish this sword with my hands
